The Report points to
a decrease in the total
as
number of fires
compared with 1887, although there has : been, I regret to say, an
increase over
the
previous
- year of fires of a serious
nature.

It affords me
however very great satisfaction to be able to inform Your Lordship that there has been during the last five

decrease in the number of
fires, as well as a diminution in their average
destructiveness,
the former being attributable to the Fire Enquiry Ordinance, and the latter to the Verandah Ordinance, both of which were
passed last Autumn.
